From copilot to accountable colleague

The organizational shift required when AI moves from answering questions to completing work.

A copilot waits. An agent notices, decides, and acts. That change is technical, but the most difficult implications are organizational.

Teams need to know who owns its goals, who reviews its exceptions, and who can change its instructions.

Give the system a job description

Write an agent charter just as carefully as a senior role:

  • the outcome it owns;
  • the tools and data it may use;
  • decisions it may make;
  • thresholds that require review;
  • measures that define good work.

The charter makes the agent legible to the people around it. It also exposes workflow ambiguity before code makes that ambiguity expensive.
